Line managers play a central role in shaping working experiences and building more effective and productive workplaces. In particular, they are ideally placed to prevent, contain and resolve conflict at work, which currently costs UK organisations more than £28billion per year. But research has consistently shown that most managers are not provided with the skills they need.
Over the past four years, researchers at the Universities of Westminster and Sheffield have been working with the Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas) to develop an approach to developing line manager capability with the potential to reach those find it difficult to access traditional approaches to training.
In this session, the Skilled Managers team will be presenting the early findings from their project and discussing some of the key challenges facing managers. We’ll also be holding a conflict clinic asking a panel of experts how they would respond to a range of tricky managerial dilemmas.
