Understanding and Explaining Management Practices to Promote Higher Productivity in UK Businesses

PI: Professor Rebecca Riley, Economic Statistics Centre of Excellence (ESCoE) and King’s College London

This project seeks to improve understanding of the causes and consequences of variation in management practices across UK businesses, and to draw from this a number of practical lessons for improving UK productivity. The project will support a second, targeted wave of the UK Management and Expectations Survey (MES) to enable identification of causal links between management, employee engagement and productivity, and particularly variations over time.

The project brings together a multi-disciplinary team to investigate longitudinal changes in management practices and performance; undertake international comparisons; analyse linked business surveys and administrative data; perform experimental analysis using big data; and conduct randomised control trials. As part of the project, the team will work closely with key stakeholders from the ONS, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), the Bank of England, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), Be the Business and Chartered Management Institute (CMI) to inform policy decisions and interventions.
